Tips on How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

22 Dec Tips on How to Stick to Your New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are a popular way for people to motivate themselves to accomplish tasks they have been putting off for a long time and aren’t looking forward to doing. Unfortunately, many people never follow through on their resolutions — they either blow them off completely or give a half-hearted attempt to reach their goal, only to give up and quit after a short period of time.

If you’re serious about sticking to your New Year’s resolutions and goals, try these tips to help you accomplish them and stay on track:

  • Plan in advance. If you wait until New Year’s Eve to make your resolutions, there’s a good chance you’ll fail because you’re clearly not putting enough thought into what you need to accomplish. You must take some time and analyze your life. Examine what you really need to change and improve. What are the things that are holding you back and keeping you from being successful? If there are multiple things, write them down in order of importance. While you can work on multiple resolutions at one time, you’ll have a better chance of succeeding if you focus on just one, especially if it’s a difficult task, such as losing weight. Make a plan to help you accomplish your resolution and stick to this plan.
  • Have realistic resolutions. When you’re deciding on what your resolutions will be, keep them within the realm of possibility. In other words, if your resolution is to win the Nobel Prize, there’s a high probability that you’ll probably fail. If your resolution is to go to college, start off by taking classes part time. If you start with a full-time class load after many years away from school, it’s likely that you’ll become overwhelmed with the amount of work, which may cause you to drop out. Know your limitations when you’re making your New Year’s resolutions and goals.

  • Tell people about your resolutions. If the resolutions you want to accomplish are going to be particularly difficult for you to accomplish, you’ll likely need some help along the way. Don’t let your pride prevent you from asking family and friends for help: This is what they’re there for. They love you and want to see you succeed, no matter what your resolutions are. If you try to do it alone, you might be setting yourself up to fail.
